30 Day Writing Challenge: Behind the Wheel

Douglas Copeland's Life After God is a novel that tells a story of a voyage, in part, behind the wheel. The author refers to himself and Generation X as the first generation to be raised without god. The character struggles to find his own personal meaning to life.

The question is asked what is there to believe after god?

I tried piecing together where I was and what I was doing in 1994 or '95 when I first read the book and why it had such an impact. I read this book in a time when the road came a calling, held a romantic charm and as such, I frequently travelled. In my own way, I chose to equate what I read to my transition from being raised in and surrounded by organized religion and, once out on my own, my personal adaptation to my own personal beliefs. The novel supplied to me surprising moments of clarity and insight.

The loosely connected semi-autobiographical short stories are escapist adventures in which the twenty-something/ thirty-something year old narrator gets behind the wheel and hits the road in a quest for an understanding and finds a genuine spiritual experience filled with ruminations of wistfulness and gloom.

Coupland has a knack for packing an emotional punch in very few words. These are some of my favourite quotes from the novel.

"And then I felt sad because I realized that once people are broken in certain ways, they can't ever be fixed, and this is something nobody ever tells you when you are young and it never fails to surprise you as you grow older as you see the people in your life break one by one. You wonder when your turn is going to be, or if it's already happened."

"Sometimes you can't realize you're in a bad mood until another person enters your orbit."

"Time ticks by; we grow older. Before we know it, too much time has passed and we've missed the chance to have had other people hurt us. To a younger me this sounded like luck; to an older me this sounds like a quiet tragedy."

30 Day Writing Challenge:They Played My Song

They Played My Song. And we laughed. Mike over at We Work for Cheese should remember this one. I think it was his idea. Back when we were attending University, I would call up the campus radio station and make a request. I would request the same song every time.

Now the campus radio station was not required to follow any particular guidelines, for example as dictated by the CRTC. Pretty much anything was allowed just as long as no discriminatory language was used. But most of the student announcers were unaware of this.

So, we would call and request a Soundgarden song. The song was Big Dumb Sex. Soundgarden considered it a spoof of the heavy metal music that preceded their grunge movement.
The lyrics would start innocently enough

Don't you don't you want to thrill me
Don't you be afraid to tell me
Tell me if you think it's ugly
But now don't you want to touch it anyway

And then the chorus would kick in.

Hey I know what to do
I'm gonna fuck fuck fuck fuck you
Fuck you
Ya I know what to do
I'm gonna fuck fuck fuck fuck you
Fuck you I'm gonna

Most of the time you would hear the song start to fade out. Sometimes the volume would increase again as the DJ had second thoughts trying to decide what to do. Sometimes if we were lucky, it would fade in and out a few times as the announcer couldn't make up their mind if they should take the song off the air or not.
Soundgarden, Live on I-5

Once I finally got bored with requesting Big Dumb Sex, I started requesting Ty Cobb. I would of course ask them to play "That baseball song from Soundgarden, Ty Cobb".

The lyrics to Ty Cobb had very little to do with baseball

I'm sittin' in a magic hat With smoke and mirrors
And tire rubber fires
Watch me disappear
What made it slow you down
Sucking on a ball and chain
Another motherfucker goes down the drain

Hard headed fuck you all
Hard headed fuck you all
Hard headed fuck you all
Hard headed fuck you all
Just add it up to the hot rod death toll

30 Day Writing Challenge:A Roadblock

We all suffer from writer's block at one time or another. A roadblock. Often we put to much pressure on ourselves (A 30 day Challenge perhaps) or we set unrealistic goals.

We are all creators. Whether at work or at school, you blog, you tweet.

If you've been at it long enough, you have your own solutions to breaking through writer's block. A simple solution is a change of pace, a breath of fresh air or a cup of joe. Sometimes we are tied to our computers and can't take that walk. What do you do? Here are a few ideas I put together so you can break through that roadblock.

  1. Take a break - a few minutes or a few days. Listen to music or read a book. Create ideas. Stop forcing ideas.
  2. Use your language tools - grab a thesaurus, find that word to change things up and get you over the hump
  3. Develop Ideas - go through your old notes, saved email, diaries or journals.
  4. Communicate - Speak to people, write to people, ask them questions.
  5. Jot - Don't write, jot down notes, scribble ideas, create a flowchart.
  6. And if that doesn't work, take a news story that intrigued you and rewrite it, add your own perspective.

30 Day Writing Challenge: Cheese - The Curds Just Didn’t Go My Whey

30 Day Creative Writing Challenge: Day 1, Cheese. Just great. I have a Lactose Intolerance. Mike & Nicky over at We Work For Cheese came up with this brilliant idea for a writing challenge. On June 1st, the challenge will begin. On June 30th, the challenge will end. From what I could gather the following bloggers and all round fine people will be participating, CheesyMike, Cheryl, If I Were God, Katherine, Laughing Mom, Linda M, Malisa, MikeWJ, NoNameDufus, Ziva's Inferno and Sandra. The whole idea is to get those creative writing juices flowing. Instead I am stuck on cheese. As I consider the list of topics for the next 30 days, just like when I eat too much dairy, I am feeling queasy, bloated and I have heartburn.

Now that I think about it, I do have a cheese anecdote. As a kid, I was a stubborn eater. If something looked gross I would decide that it was gross and would just eat a cheese sandwich. Sliced singles were my go to food from the ages of three to nine and the plastic wrapped singles were my best friends.

Hey, I said I had an anecdote. I didn't say I had a good anecdote.
