Game of the Weak

I have made an editorial decision. Over the last three months I have been publishing the Game of the Week feature. I have run into three dilemmas.
Number 1 - I have run out of good games from my archives.
Number B - I have not discovered enough new games worthy of posting.
Number III - Of all my posts, the games get the fewest hits.

So, I have decided that the Game of the Week has gone the way of Board Games. Or is that bored games? I will feature a new one from time to time but only the best that I find.
In the meantime, I will focus on writing reviews and stories, playing Mafia Wars and occasionally going to work.

I am also taking suggestions. If you have a good site or game that would appeal to the masses send an email or add in your comment.

Game of the Week - The Expendables

Big movie with big names. Celebrate the old school style with this throwback game. The Expendables movie brought us action stars with plastic surgery. Remember when Silicon Valley was new? The game style is a throwback to when Arnie, Bruce, Sly and Dolph were young. The 80s was an era when these graphics may have been considered new. Perhaps the actors have aged gracefully, the game graphics style? I'll leave it to you.

Ok. it is worth a few minutes of fun to play this arcade style shoot em up game.
The game is challenging and difficult. No room for error. The controls are relatively easy to manage.

Game of the Week - Pixel Breakout

Crazy beautiful Pixel Breakout is based on the classic game Breakout. Pixel Breakout takes you to a whole new level. A microscopic level. Only two tools are required, the mouse, and patience. Use your mouse to control your paddle and eliminate the bricks, pixel by pixel. And yes, some patience is required at the start. For the first couple minutes it will feel like an impossible task to eliminate the entire ceiling. But wait for the surprise. Trust me, it's worth it.

Grow RPG - Game of the Week

Grow RPG is a great game. It has such a simple playing concept but will manage to keep you enthralled. I have to admit I have not been able to solve this one yet. Grow RPG is one of many games in a series created by the brilliant On, a Japanese programmer and game designer who runs the site eyemaze.com. Last week I featured another of On's creations, Tontie.
The concept behind Grow RPG, and most of the other games on the site, the player must drag or click the pieces in the correct order to complete the puzzle.
The animations are charming and intriguing as, depending on the order you select the pieces a different little series unfolds.

Simply drag your pieces into the centre of the Grow sphere and watch what happens. Try different orders until you maximize each piece. You have eighty moves in Grow RPG.

Game of The Week - Tontie

Tontie is a fun and free internet game. And it is the game of the week. As the site describes it "this is kind of an evolved whack-a-mole game". Instructions at each level tell you what to hit and what not to hit. Each level adds a little difficulty. Accumulate gold coins to purchase a bigger mallet or more lives.
You use your number pad for controls. Click the number that corresponds with wear the tontie appears. This game takes reflexes but also an understanding of the pictogram. When the Store appears whack it to get inside to purchase upgrades.
If you don't need lives, I suggest upgrading your hammer as soon as possible.

It's a Numbers Game

A simple numbers game , you may even call Chain Factor a mathematical Tetris. A Connect Four with more numbers?

While at first glance the board may appear intimidating, the concept is simple.
Eliminate the tiles based on their number.
A row of three tiles will wipe out tiles with the number three. A row of four will eliminate the Four tiles, etc.

The goal, remove as many tiles as possible and get the highest score.

Start off in Basic mode to learn the game. Later, try Power Mode. The Power feature allows you to use three different Power Ups which will help in clearing the board. The game's simple concept reveals a greater complexity at this level.
Survival Mode allows one Power Up and is considerably more difficult. Have fun!

Game of the Week PAC-XON !

Take two classic games. Mix them together and what do you get? You get Pac-Xon.

Pac-Xon is a clever mash up of Pac Man and Xonix (or Qix). Consider this a less repetitive version of Pac Man with a few more bells and whistles.

The idea of this game, and the original Qix, is to claim sections of the board until you have possession of 80%. You do this by building boxes, all the while avoiding the evil ghosts.

The game starts off easy enough but at each level more and more ghosts are thrown at you. Don’t forget to grab the fruit and power ups for some surprises.

This is a throw back game so don’t look for state-of-the-art graphics. It is basic and based on these two archetypal 80s games. The game board is controlled by your arrow keys.

Game of the Week - Chroma Wars !!

A "sequel" to Fantasy Kommander, Chroma Wars is a turn base strategy game where your goal is to defeat the hordes of enemies and capture their headquarters, meanwhile defending your own. There are in-game instructions to help you start off.

Place your soldiers on the chess-like grid, and attack your enemy using magic and technology.

As you beat each level, purchase more powerful soldiers and upgrade your army.

Command, upgrade and expand your army of infantry men, tanks and mechs to win every battle!

Sunday Game of the Week - Soccer Balls

Just in time for the World Cup Finals. The goal of of the game Soccer Balls is to get a red card.

Did your team lose? Was your country unfairly eliminated? Should the World Cup have instant replay? Do you want to take it out on the referees?
Make the referee angry by hitting him in the head with a soccer ball. Choose your team jersey, be it the Dutch or Spain, England, USA or Germany, etc. (hmm. why isn't there a Canadian jersey?)

Sunday Game Of The Week - Sonny

Sonny is my pick for game of the week. This could very well be the game of the decade. Sonny is an interactive epic RPG. Hosted at Armor Games, the cool graphics and great characters helped make Sonny one of the classics. It is also one of the most popular web games in recent years. In Sonny, you get thrown into the battle immediately as a reanimated corpse, gaining allies, weapons and strength and move through this linear story line, all the while guided by some basic scripted dialogue.

The author, Jakrin Juanbanich, better known as Krin, has put out several other terrific games but Sonny is my favourite. The game takes you through turned based battles against humans and humanoids of ever increasing power. Sonny is popular, already over 7 million gameplays on Armor Games, so popular it garnered a sequel. Sonny II has had 14 million hits. I consider the original far superior to the sequel. It's not new, but if you haven't discovered it yet, it's time to play Sonny.

Sunday Game of the Week - Elona Shooter

Elona Shooter is not your run of the mill Flash game. Your charge is to defend your castle against the waves of marauding warriors, dragons, suicide bombers, mice, giant spiders and chickens. Yes. Chickens. Have mercy!
What makes this game most intriguing is the ever increasing difficulty at every level. It gets frakkin' hard.
It is a castle defense game with some RPG thrown in. Earn gold and action points to build castle, character and weapon upgrades. You can start off solo or with one team member and build your crew as you increase experience. One tip, I tend to start with the Hunter class. I like the crossbow weapon.

Elona Shooter

Addictive? It just may be. I've been playing this off and on for some months. Your progress in Elona Shooter is automatically saved as you go, enabling you to stretch your game out over days, or months. An original take on an old idea. Elona Shooter will fulfill your shoot to kill needs.

Game of The Week - Super Text Twist

If you enjoy word games you will like this little time waster. Along the lines of Scramble this game requires you to spell out words from the available letters. Beat the clock by completing the list or find the six letter word to move on. The higher you go the more difficult it gets. Super Text Twist is a super word game.

Free Online Games

Long before Mafia Wars came along, I got hooked on internet gaming. I do not like purchasing games as they do not hold my interest long enough to make it worth the purchase. After a month they usually end up in the junk drawer - I may make an exception when it comes to EA’s NHLWhile there are tons of games available, I was looking for hassle free sites. No registration, no pop-ups, no hidden links and above all, free to play.

I developed a particular interest in the Tower Defense genre. I do not remember which version came first. There are so many of them. Flash Element TD was the first that I discovered. The concept apparently comes from World of Warcraft III.

In the future I’ll list the best online games period. Here below are some of the best Tower Defense games. Not necessarily a Top Ten list. But these are some of the best and with which I didn’t mind wasting time.
Click the links in the titles to go to the games.

The first one that I became aware of. It’s basic and a whole lot of fun. Less strategy required than some of the later games.

The sequel is a whole lot different from the first. Smoother graphics, both the appearance and movement. Simpler in some ways.

This one will keep you busy for a long time. It has many levels and becomes increasingly difficult. You may need a walk-through. You will also need a fast computer for the higher levels. It is one of the best.

Cool. Really cool. Several versions, I prefer this original. Music is okay and not as offensive as most online games. Cool graphics. Like I said, cool.

There was something about this game that makes it one of the most fun.
There are six missions, each tougher than the one before.

This is the original version. I thought it was goofy when I first saw it but ended playing it for a while. Several versions, see below.

Many options with this version of Desktop TD. This “Pro” version could keep you busy for hours.

If this is the first TD game you play you may like it. I am just throwing in because of the theme. I fell on it the other day. Nothing special and not original. Just hyping the Avengers and Iron Man theme. If you like Iron Man you may like this.

This one is a little different. Pick your Archer, Mage or Ninja. There are a couple different versions of Ultimate Defense. Nice looking board. Pretty to look at.

Wasn’t sure about this one at first. Quirky and amusing. I wouldn’t start on this one but after playing Desktop and some of the others you may like the change.

This one is relatively new and a little more advanced then the other games. Cursed Treasure is challenging and you will have to strategize throughout all the levels. I would place this in the Top Three.

That's it for today. I have to figure out where that smell in my fridge is coming from. If you are looking for hassle free sites, no registration, no pop-ups, no hidden links and above all, free to play, try to some of these game links.
