The Equalizer

Sin City: A Dame to Die For
Sin City: A Dame to Die For
My personal choice for 2014. A sequel to the 2005 film and based on the graphic novels. The release was pushed to 2014, with a title change as well. The film's ensemble cast includes returning actors Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke, and Bruce Willis.
Newcomers to the series include Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Jamie Chung, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Haysbert, Marton Csokas, Julia Garner, Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, Stacy Keach, Christopher Meloni, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Piven, and Crystal McCahill.

Three of the film's four segments - "Just Another Saturday Night", "A Dame To Kill For" and "The Long, Bad Night" - are prequels to the first film.
22 August 2014

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
If I said Jennifer Lawrence stars in this one would that be a spoiler? This movie was split in two, perhaps taking the lead set by The Hobbit. In the third movie of the series, Katniss Everdeen reluctantly leads the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. As the war that will determine the fate of Panem escalates to the point of destruction to the other districts by the Capitol, Katniss must figure out for herself whom she can trust and what needs to be done, with everything she cares for in the balance.
Part 1, November 12, 2014 (Part 2, November 2015)

The Expendables 3
Joinng Sylvester Stallone this time around will be Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Mel Gibson, in addition to the usual cast of veteran mercenaries. Gibson is the bad guy this time around. Look for fights, blood, guts and bullets. I would like to see an Expendables with Eastwood, Bronson and  McQueen.
Release date: August 15, 2014
Look for an all-female cast version of the Expendables down the road.

The Expendables 3

Jersey Boys
The Hobbit: There and Back Again
I have mixed feeling about the The Hobbit. I have read every book with Tolkien's name on it. I have read books about Tolkien and books about his books. I have seen all the film and TV adaptations of his works. Am I overselling the fact that I am a fan?
While I was looking forward to this latest adaptation, there was no reason to stretch the book into three films, there was not enough material to do so. That being said, this last one will contain the major battles in the story and should be exciting.

What follows is a selection of some of the most anticipated movies for release in 2013. A whole mess of new movies are heading our way in 2013. Here are some of the best and brightest and most anticipated new movies for 2013. Look for trailers and plot summaries for some must see movies and the most talked about films of 2013.

Oz: The Great and Powerful (March 8, 2013)

Oz The Great and Powerful
A stage magician is hurled into a fantasy world, and must use his wits to stay ahead of three enchantresses who have plans for him. This story explains how the Wizard arrived in Oz and became its ruler. A prequel to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. What so many people do not know, or forgot, is that L. Frank Baum wrote 14 novels that take place in this magical land. With Sam Raimi as the director will this film be darker than the 1939 classic?

Director: Sam Raimi
Stars: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis

Carrie

Carrie (March 15, 2013)

What? Carrie? Again? A sheltered high school girl unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after she is bullied and pushed too far by her peers. This is the third time this Stephen King novel has been brought to the big screen. Chloë Grace Moretz takes on the title role immortalized by Sissy Spacek. It also stars the ageless and beautiful Julianne Moore.

Star Trek Into Darkness (May 17, 2013)

Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve

Alice Eve in Star Trek
After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.
Rumours state that Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing a new Khan and Peter Weller (aka RoboCop) joins the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in a major way. Other rumours indicate Cumberpatch is playing another villain from the classic TV series. But, what else do we need to make J.J. Abrams's return to Roddenberry space the most anticipated sequel of 2013? A Klingon subplot? More Spock? Tribbles? William Shatner? Unlikely we will see Tribbles or Shatner, but I'll bank on the rest. Click here for the trailer (opens in a new window)

The Hangover Part III (May 24, 2013)

The continuing misadventures of friends, Phil, Stu and Alan.
Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Heather Graham

The crazier it gets... But if II was a copy of The Hangover, what will III be like? Making close to $600 million is perhaps reason enough not to care. For us more fun and more of the Wolfpack. And I am pleased that Heather Graham is back. Very pleased. Yes, pleased.
Hangover Part III

The Fast and the Furious 6 (May 22, 2013)

Director: Justin Lin
Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez

Didn't Rodriguez's character Letty die? Hmm... it will be interesting to see how she gets reintroduced. A time warp of some kind. No, wait that was Star Trek. More action and more of the straight faced Johnson. Who is the hero here?
Fast and Furious 6

After Earth (June 7, 2013)

Directors: Evan Goldberg | Seth Rogen

This is the End

Jack the Giant Slayer (June 15, 2013)

A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess. Jack the Giant Slayer perhaps has a slicker sound then Jack and The Beanstalk, although there was a 2010 live action film with that exact title.

Director: Bryan Singer
The terrific cast includes Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, and Ian McShane

Jack the Giant Slayer

Monsters University (June 20, 2013)

In this prequel to Monsters, we get a look at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at the University of Fear - when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

Director: Dan Scanlon
Stars: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Joel Murray
Monsters University

World War Z (June 21, 2013)

We have seen a lot of great films of zombie lore in the last few years, call it the golden age, or at least the silver age of the walking dead in film. After Zombieland, The Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, can there be another good one?

Based on the novel by Max Brooks, who also wrote The Zombie Survival Guide, a UN representative travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly Zombie pandemic writing a report on the great zombie war, interviews survivors in the wake of World War Z. Brad Pitt stars.  Brooks was a writer on SNL from 2001- 2003. He is also son of the legendary Mel Brooks.

Lone Ranger

Director: Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day

The Wolverine (July 24, 2013)

Wolverine travels to Japan to train with a samurai warrior. Maybe he can stop by China and meet up with Iron Man. And Famke Janssen has a cameo. Rumour has it that this film is a sequel to X-Men 3: The Last Stand but contains a whole mess of flashbacks. Look for the Silver Samurai and Viper.

Director: James Mangold
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Tao Okamoto, Brian Tee

Elysium / Baja Dunes  (August 9, 2013)

Set in the year 2159, where the very wealthy lives on a man-made space station while the rest of population reside on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds. Director  Neill Blomkamp is perhaps best known for District 9, so it is fitting that he brought along Sharlto Copley for this outer space action drama. Throw in Damon and Foster to the mix for an amazing cast. The movie has changed titles... so I will wait for the official release to update the title.

Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga

I, Frankenstein (September 13, 2013)

Frankenstein's creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans. Any movie starring Bill Nighy will be at least enjoyable for his performance. Nighy plays a demon-army leader to Aaron Exkhart's modern day monster. Based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux.

Director: Stuart Beattie
Stars: Yvonne Strahovski, Bill Nighy, Aaron Eckhart, Jai Courtney

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (October 4, 2013)

The town's most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. Two of the film's three segments are based on Sin City comics: "A Dame to Kill For", which ran six issues, and "Just Another Saturday Night", which ran for one.
In the seven years since the last flick, both Brittany Murphy and Michael Clarke Duncan passed away. Both their characters were recast. As was Devon Aoki's as she was pregnant when filming began.

Directors: Frank Miller | Robert Rodriguez
Stars: Clive Owen, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson

The World's End (October 25, 2013)

The World's End
Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike
Director: Edgar Wright

In my top five of most anticipated films of 2013. Five friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival. This British sci-fi adventure reunites Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright, the same trio that brought us Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.. Maybe this one will be the funniest of the year. Much like the previous film, This is the End, I am wondering how the world will end. Aliens? A bad cold?

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (November 22, 2013)

The continuing adventures of Katniss Everdeen, as she prepares for the Quarter Quell but not everything is as it seems. The Hunger Games was one of the biggest movies of 2012 as the popular series by Suzanne Collins was adapted for the big screen.

Director: Francis Lawrence
Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Woody Harrelson.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (December 13, 2013)

The Dwarfs, Bilbo and Gandalf have successfully escaped the misty mountains, but Bilbo has gained the one ring. They all continue their journey to get their gold back from the Dragon Smaug.
Can you capture lightning in a bottle? Jackson tried to capture LOTR's magic in the first film An Unexpected Journey. If you read the book you are asking the same question, why make this into three films? That being said, I will be there on the night of the premier.

Director: Peter Jackson
Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Cate Blanchett

Ghostbusters III  (201?)

Rumours abound had most of the original cast and a few younger known B status actors. But nobody is associated with this film any longer.

Arrested Development (201? )

Return of the Bluths. What's the hold up?! A limited 9-10 episode series will air prior to the movie's release.
Arrested Development
Super Troopers 2 (201?)

Has been in development hell for a couple years. Who knows if this will ever be released. A sequel to the incredibly funny 2001 film. Apparently Broken Lizard is working on this film right meow. The plot is said to involve the U.S. government finding areas where their border markers were incorrect. Those areas of land that were previously thought to be in Canada, but are actually part of the US. The Super Troopers are enlisted to patrol the area to assist in making it part of the US territory. Essentially imposing American law on a bunch of Canadians.

Zombieland 2 (201?)

The number one rule is good cardio. No official word if the the cast will be back. Only freaking rumours. The film is said to be in pre-pre-production.

A whole mess of new movies are heading our way in 2013. I am excited to see most of these 2013 new movies. Did I miss any?

Movie Trailer: Ted

Ted is Real
Mark Wahlberg plays John, a normal guy from Boston whose best friend is a Teddy Bear come to life. The 27 year teddy-human relationship creates a strain when John meets his true love played by Mila Kunis. Ted is Seth MacFarlane's first foray into live action

He was previously known for Family Guy, Cleveland Show and American Dad and rumoured to be at the helm of a Flintstones reboot for FOX television.
With very little advanced marketing, this film has erupted in the last couple days. Apart from Wahlberg and Kunis, Ted also stars Seth MacFarlane and Giovanni Ribisi. Look for a July 2012 release in a theatre near you.

Anchorman 2

Run Burgundy (Will Ferrell), San Diego's favorite Anchorman, made a surprise appearance on Conan to jam with the band, and announce a sequel to Anchorman. I guess it will be called Anchorman 2: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy's Return. Judd Apatow and the rest original cast are rumoured to be in the sequel.

Carnage - Film Review

Carnage, a film by Roman Polanski, is an adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s award-winning play God of Carnage. Funny and at times uncomfortably funny, at 79 minutes the film moves along quickly. The not quite real-time film shows the interaction between two couples whose sons were involved in a fight.

The movie is set entirely in the apartment of one couple, played by Jodie Foster and John C Reilly, as they host the aggressor's parents (Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz). The wonderful cast captures the initial awkward forced politeness and later the conversation's escalation to verbal sparring.
Coffee, crumble and alcohol is used to smooth over the cracked relationship, but backfires as inhibitions drop, and builds some unexpected connections as the couples' sparring turns to politics, gender, middle class ethics and parental responsibility.

Sometimes claustrophobic, Carnage exposes the flaws of our communication first contemporary society where our message is often mislaid in an attempt to deliver the way we expect the receiver wishes to receive it. The film is well acted, if not a little over the top on Foster's part. The conflicts are ferocious as they expose the unpleasant truths buried not so far below the surface. Carnage is a dramatic film that is laugh out loud funny.

New Movies 2012

See my 2013 list here: http://www.stubbornfool.com/2013/01/new-movies-2013.html
What follows is a selection of some of the most anticipated movies for release in 2012. A whole mess of new movies are heading our way in 2012. There are a few brand new stories. But some of the most anticipated films of this new year are sequels, others are remakes, and the rest are made up of rehashed ideas. I included trailers for some, and descriptions for all of these most talked about films.

The Dark Knight Rises
The Dark Knight Rises, July 2012
The film marks the final in the Batman trilogy for Christian Bale. The idea was to make three films starring Bale  with Christopher Nolan at the helm. The villain this time is Bane, yes, that Bane. The one that broke Batman's back in the 1993 comic book. I am guessing that won't happen here. Set eight years after The Dark Knight,  Bane will be The Batman's ultimate challenge, both physically and mentally.
Perhaps you have already seen it. This video has been viewed some 30 million times between iTunes and YouTube.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2
Due out November 2012. The love story between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen concludes in this
final installment of this Stephenie Meyer's series. If you are a girl you will like this. Get what I am saying?
Breaking Dawn Part 2
The Avengers, May 2012
Looking at the characters and the actors, this should be an awesome flick. Should be. The movie stays true to the original story line of the world's greatest superheroes banding together to save the world, and realizing they don't like each other much. Look for Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Incredible Hulk in this live action Marvel sequel. Stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johanson, Samuel L Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow.
Watch the trailer and get blown away.

The Expendables 2, August 2012
I guess JCVD learned his lesson. Van Damme apparently and foolishly turned down a role in the first film. Look for him and Chuck Norris and a who's who of the action world. Also joining the cast is Liam Hemsworth.
Stars Statham, Bruce Willis, Stallone, Schwarzennegar, Jet Li, Lundgren. My disappointment? Charisma Carpenter is nowhere to be found in part 2. I am happy to note Steven Segal is also nowhere to be found.
edit: Carpenter will appear in the film.

The Hobbit, the Dwarves

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Dec 2012
The Hobbit: There and Back Again, Dec 2013
I am a huge fan of Tolkien's books, especially, the Trilogy. This could be the film of the year. Or decade. Will lightning strike twice? The Hobbit is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings and covers the story of how Bilbo found the ring and his adventures before and after. They have taken certain liberties in the story - as they did with LOTR - to make the film appealing to all. This time, mostly in the form of Evangeline Lilly's character Tauriel which was made up for this film.

The Amazing Spider-Man, July 2012
A reboot of a reboot of a reboot. Wouldn't it be embarrassing for the filmmakers if this movie sucked? After all, it's only five years since the last Spider-Man movie. Was it necessary to start over? I was wondering who would go see it. And then I realized, I would got see it. Andrew Garfield takes over as Spider-Man. And it also stars the amazing Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. Emma freaking Stone! Also Martin Sheen and Denis Leary.

Underworld Awakening, 20 January 2012
No idea if it is any good. But it stars Kate Beckinsale. In leather! The action series Romeo and Juliet for vampires and werewolves continues. Twilight for guys. So if I wasn't clear earlier gentlemen, Twilight = bad, Underworld = good.

Speaking of hot women in leather Milla Jovovich returns in Resident Evil: Retribution. Michelle Rodriguez returns as Rain as they once again battle the Umbrella Corporation. September 2012
Resident Evil 5:Retribution

Total Recall, August 2012
Kate Beckinsale stars with Colin Farrell taking over the role of Quaid in this remake of the 1990 Schwarzneggar feature. Jessica Biel is Melina. The amazingly talented Bill Nighy costars.

The Great Gatsby, December 2012
This adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel stars Leonardo Dicaprio. After The Departed I no longer hated Leonardo Dicaprio and have since watched his performances with an open mind. I got over what he did to Growing Pains.
The Great Gatsby is a classic that we were forced to read in grade 11. I guess I got over that too.
This Baz Luhrmann directed film is the 7th retelling of the novel.

I have seen several dramatic versions of Les Miserables but oddly enough I have never seen the musical. The story is set in early 19th century France, Jean Valjean is released from prison, breaks parole to create a new life for himself all the while evading the driven Inspector Javert.
This musical stars Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter. December 2012

I've had a boner for this next movie ever since it was first announced and I sat through the pain as its release was met with delay after delay. Finally set for a November 2012 release, this remake may suck but I want to see Red Dawn. In this version a group of teenagers attempt to save their town from an attack as North Korean soldiers invade the United States.
The first one was a lot of fun and showed some unexpected grit for a movie of its era. And we got to see all the stars of the 90s and early 00s before they were stars. Can't predict that the remake will have the same impact.
Red Dawn

Seen the trailer? John Carter, Edgar Rice Burroughs second most famous character March 2012.

I will watch anything with Liam Neeson. He's got a busy year ahead with four films set to be released.
The Grey January 2012
In Alaska, an oil drilling team struggles to survive after a plane crash strands them in the wild. Hunting the humans are a pack of wolves who see them as intruders. Also,
Wrath of the Titans, March 2012 Sequel to the the remake Clash of the Titans.
Battleship, May 2012 Based on the Milton Bradley game, a fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.
Untitled Taken Sequel, Oct 2012 This time Neeson's character is kidnapped. No mention if it is the daughter that rescues him.

The Raven, March 2012
I have read everything ever written by Edgar Allan Poe so this is a bit of a kick. A fictionalized account of Poe's last days in pursuit of a serial killer and completely opposite of Poe's true character. Poe the person was not a happy man and was hardly the hero. In this film the poet is in pursuit of a killer whose murders mirror those of the characters in the stories. John Cusack stars.

Because it hasn't made enough money, the 2nd highest grossing film of all time will be re-released in a 3D version. I can't wait to see that scene where Jack sketches Rose. Yes, Titanic 3D. April 2012

Three Stooges, April 2012
Everybody who was anybody, was associated with this film at one point or another. Larry David plays a nun. So it has to be funny. Sean Hayes plays Larry and some lesser known actors are the other stooges.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, June 2012
Based on a true story.
In it President Lincoln's mother is killed by a supernatural creature, which fuels his passion to crush vampires and their slave-owning helpers. Stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Rufus Sewell.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

World War Z, December 2012
We have seen a lot of great films of zombie lore in the last few years, call it the golden age, or at least the silver age of the walking dead in film. After Zombieland, The Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later, can there be another good one?
Based on the novel by Max Brooks, who also wrote The Zombie Survival Guide, a UN representative, writing a report on the great zombie war, interviews survivors in the wake of World War Z. Brad Pitt stars.  Brooks was a writer on SNL from 2001- 2003. He is also son of the legendary Mel Brooks.

World War Z
Star Trek 2
And a few more...
Star Trek Sequel
May 2013 and in 3D. J.J. Abrams' reboot continues. Set production started in 2011. Filming started January 2012.

Ghostbusters III,  201?
Most of the original cast and a few younger known B status actors.

Arrested Development, 201? Return of the Bluths. What's the hold up?!
Arrested Development

Super Troopers 2 Has been in development hell for a couple years. Who knows if this will ever be released. A sequel to the incredibly funny 2001 film.

A whole mess of new movies are heading our way in 2012. I am excited to see most of these 2012 new movies. Did I miss any? Super Troopers 2, Arrested Development, Ghostbusters III, Star Trek Sequel,World War Z, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Three Stooges, The Raven, John Carter, The Avengers, Red Dawn, Les Miserables, The Great Gatsby, Total Recall, Underworld Awakening, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, The Expendables 2, The Twilight Saga, The Dark Knight Rises
