The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino's latest is a western set in post-Civil War Wyoming. Subject to release late 2015 or early 2016 the cast of The Hateful Eight is filled with several names previously associated with Tarantino. Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen each have major roles. Also in the cast are Kurt Rusell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Channing Tatum and Bruce Dern.
The Hateful Eight

The plot involves a group of bounty hunters as they try to find shelter during a blizzard but get involved in a plot of betrayal and deception.

The big news that broke is that Ennio Morricone is the soundtrack composer. This marks the first time in 40 years that Morricone scored a Western.
While Morricone has kept himself busy these last few decades with over 500 film credits to his name, his most iconic work perhaps came from the spaghetti westerns, Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good the Bad and the Ugly.

Sin City: A Dame to Die For
Sin City: A Dame to Die For
My personal choice for 2014. A sequel to the 2005 film and based on the graphic novels. The release was pushed to 2014, with a title change as well. The film's ensemble cast includes returning actors Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke, and Bruce Willis.
Newcomers to the series include Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Jamie Chung, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Haysbert, Marton Csokas, Julia Garner, Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, Stacy Keach, Christopher Meloni, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Piven, and Crystal McCahill.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

In the third movie of the series, Katniss Everdeen reluctantly leads the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. As the war that will determine the fate of Panem escalates to the point of destruction to the other districts by the Capitol, Katniss must figure out for herself whom she can trust and what needs to be done, with everything she cares for in the balance.

The Expendables 3
Joinng Sylvester Stallone this time around will be Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Mel Gibson, in addition to the usual cast of veteran mercenaries. Gibson is the bad guy this time around. Look for fights, blood, guts and bullets. I would like to see an Expendables with Eastwood, Bronson and  McQueen.

Look for an all-female cast version of the Expendables down the road.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again
I have mixed feeling about the The Hobbit. I have read every book with Tolkien's name on it. I have read books about Tolkien and books about his books. I have seen all the film and TV adaptations of his works. Am I overselling the fact that I am a fan?
While I was looking forward to this latest adaptation, there was no reason to stretch the book into three films, there was not enough material to do so. That being said, this last one will contain the major battles in the story and should be exciting.

World War Z

World War Z is an apocalyptic adventure movie that features Gerry (Brad Pitt), a United Nations investigator racing against time, and around the world, attempting to save human life from a zombie epidemic. Lane really racks up those air miles.

With a mix of strong acting, a strong visual appeal and an interesting story instead of just CGI and effects, World War Z is a treat to watch. Hardly a groundbreaking film, it is a new take on that old story of the overachieving everyday guy facing horror and desperation, doing whatever he can to survive. It is a well made action picture hinging on Pitt’s solid, charismatic performance.

A joy for the zombie fan, whether you are a lover of the runners from 28 Days Later or the slow walkers of George Romero or The Walking Dead. Unlike TWD though, this movie managed to be frightening while showing little gore. It is a smart and well crafted and a thrilling film.

World War Z is a based on the novel by Max Brooks. While adapted from the novel, the film is only loosely based on the series of interviews of which the book is made up. Brooks, son of Mel, also wrote the Zombie Survival Guide and was a staff writer on Saturday Night Live.

The only issue I have with the movie was the reliance on email by the various government and military bodies. If the zombie scare was so urgent, why didn't anyone just pick up the phone?! Cell phone out of range? No quarters for the payphone? We still have land-lines, and from the plot, satellite telephones are readily available.

This film is intense. You feel the panic and tension, especially as the film first unfolds. The director, Marc Forster, nurtures the tension for almost the entire run of the film.

World War Z was originally intended as a trilogy. Those plans were quashed when rewrites and reshooting were required. The film was set to open in December 2012 but was pushed back six months. There is talk now of at least one more sequel. What with the great opening weekend results ($66 million), WWZ's start makes it the most successful debut for an action film since Avatar. What would the sequel be called anyway? World War Y? Armistice Day of the Dead?

And it is probably one of the best big budget films year to date. I will leave you with one last suggestion before I end my review of World War Z. When flying, always sit in first class.

World War Z

Movie Trailer: Ted

Ted is Real
Mark Wahlberg plays John, a normal guy from Boston whose best friend is a Teddy Bear come to life. The 27 year teddy-human relationship creates a strain when John meets his true love played by Mila Kunis. Ted is Seth MacFarlane's first foray into live action

He was previously known for Family Guy, Cleveland Show and American Dad and rumoured to be at the helm of a Flintstones reboot for FOX television.
With very little advanced marketing, this film has erupted in the last couple days. Apart from Wahlberg and Kunis, Ted also stars Seth MacFarlane and Giovanni Ribisi. Look for a July 2012 release in a theatre near you.

Carnage - Film Review

Carnage, a film by Roman Polanski, is an adaptation of Yasmina Reza’s award-winning play God of Carnage. Funny and at times uncomfortably funny, at 79 minutes the film moves along quickly. The not quite real-time film shows the interaction between two couples whose sons were involved in a fight.

The movie is set entirely in the apartment of one couple, played by Jodie Foster and John C Reilly, as they host the aggressor's parents (Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz). The wonderful cast captures the initial awkward forced politeness and later the conversation's escalation to verbal sparring.
Coffee, crumble and alcohol is used to smooth over the cracked relationship, but backfires as inhibitions drop, and builds some unexpected connections as the couples' sparring turns to politics, gender, middle class ethics and parental responsibility.

Sometimes claustrophobic, Carnage exposes the flaws of our communication first contemporary society where our message is often mislaid in an attempt to deliver the way we expect the receiver wishes to receive it. The film is well acted, if not a little over the top on Foster's part. The conflicts are ferocious as they expose the unpleasant truths buried not so far below the surface. Carnage is a dramatic film that is laugh out loud funny.

Carnage, stars Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz

John Carter

John Carter is an action-adventure film set on the mysterious and exotic planet Mars. Based on the classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the film tells the story of the war-weary Civil War captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is mysteriously transported to Mars where he becomes embroiled in an epic conflict amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Mars and its people rests in his hands. Look for it in a theatre near you in March 2012. And the trailer is freaking awesome.

Real Steel Review

Evangeline Lilly
Real Steel is a near gritty action film that brags a script which is fun, corny and exciting all at once. The movie is a mix between Big Daddy and Rocky - from the father and son reunion to the underdog fighter rising through the ranks. Futuristic robots or not, Real Steel features some of the most realistic fight scenes in any boxing movie to date. (Let's exclude The Fighter, and Million Dollar Baby). The motion captured fighting scenes are impressive and so immersing to the point where I was ready to get back into the ring myself.
Jackman plays a former and washed up boxer who makes a living pitting his robot against other robots in a sport that has replaced boxing and MMA.

Product placement galore, the movie will have an appeal to any video game junkie or fan of  boxing. Based on the short story Steel, by Rchard Matheson (I Am Legend) Real Steel is not just a great boxing movie, this is a truly enjoyable film. The story was first put to film in 1963 as a Twilight Zone episode, starring none other than Lee Marvin. A side love story between Hugh Jackman and the beautiful Evangeline Lilly, and the growing bond between father and son adds enough drama to make this film enjoyable to all audiences.  Scroll down for the trailer.

A Race Around the Globe

Bob tells the story of a little hamster that tries to follow his true love around the globe. Can he catch up?

Make sure to watch the film past the credits, enjoy!

From the director:
This was the first time we created an 3d animated movie during our studies at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg and we would have never thought that it became that successful.
There are a lot of things we would have done differently nowadays but for a small team, six months and almost no knowledge of the software, we are proud with the result and finally want to share it with everyone.

The Princess Bride Reunion

Start to finish, The Princess Bride is a wonderful film. From the acting of Billy Crystal, the beautiful Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, and Cary Elwes, and the comic delivery of Wallace Shawn, Andre the Giant, and Peter Falk to the Mark Knopfler composed soundtrack, the song Storybook Love, sung by Willy DeVille this is a perfectly crafted film. Based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, this fairy tale adventure is a must see for its comedic genius, strong performances and ability to both celebrate and parody fantasy - swashbuckler convention. The cast of the Rob Reiner gem sat down for a reunion on Good Morning America.

The Captains - Film Preview. A Star Trek Journey

The Captains' Shatner Poster
The Captains is a feature length documentary written and directed by William Shatner. The film is a voyage with Shatner as he interviews each actor that took on the mantle of star ship captain. From Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Scott Bakula, and the newest captain, sitting in the chair that Shatner made iconic, Chris Pine. The ultimate trek for any Star Trek geek, Trekkie, or casual fan.

Shatner, for the most part has been in the spot light for the last number of years. We have seen him age on TV in Boston Legal and TV commercials. Shocking though is seeing Mulgrew and Avery, as they hit the north side of their 50s and 60s. Avery, always so well spoken and a powerful performer, is somewhat aged from the Captain Sisko we loved.

Shatner takes a personal journey, to where no one has gone before, to discuss with each actor, how Star Trek and their role as a member of Star Fleet shaped and impacted their lives. Filled with clips from the series and movies, along with interviews with their costars, The Captains is a film both light in bearing and at times surprisingly grave as discussions revolve around life in around the Star Trek universe. With a running time of an hour and forty minutes The Captains is scheduled for an October 2011 release.

And here is trailer two of The Captains.

The Amazing Spider-Man New Trailer

When I heard of the announced 2012 release of a refitted and redone Spider-Man movie I could not understand the purpose. After all, we just finished seeing a highly successful trio of films. Tobey Maguire was fine as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man - although, he is better suited for a role such as in The Cider House Rules. The new Spidey film starring Andrew Garfield in the title role is scheduled for a July 3, 2012 3D and traditional release The film will focus on Parker in his high school days as he develops his powers as Spider-Man. Money grab or a necessary re-imagining?

No Strings Attached To Friends with Benefits

Would someone please tell me the difference between No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits? At first I thought they were the same movie. Then, I wondered why Mila Kunis was doing two movies with the same storyline. Then I realized No Strings Attached starred Kunis' Black Swan costar Nathalie Portman.

No Strings Attached plot summary:
A guy and girl try to keep their relationship strictly physical, but it's not long before they learn that they want something more. (Stars Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher)

Friends with Benefits plot summary:
Dylan and Jamie discover that adding the act of sex to their friendship does lead to complications. (Stars Mila Kunis, Justin Timberlake)

No String Attached
Friends With Benefits
Then I realized that No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits were the same movie as Black Swan, except Black Swan didn't have those guys that got in the way and I was able to focus on Portman and Kunis. I didn't actually see Black Swan. Or the other movies. But, I did look at the movie posters.
Black Swan
Edit: And then a couple weeks later I found out I was not the only one who had this idea. Or perhaps the producer of the following video came up with the idea after seeing my post.

Last Night - Film Review

It's not the end of the world... there's still six hours left. So goes the tag line for the film Last Night.

Last Night, released in 1998, is a drama laced with dark humour. Intersecting plots follow a number of characters' final hours before the end of the world. The movie stars a who's who of Canadian film, Sandra Oh, Sarah Polley, Callum Keth Rennie and director, and sometimes actor David Cronenberg. Don Mckellar wrote, directed and stars in the film. What would you do if the world were coming to an end?

Before going off to meet his wife (Oh) for their final meal together, Cronenberg's character Duncan spends much of his last few hours calling his customers, assuring them that service will be maintained to the very end. Jennifer (Polly) plans to attend a world ending party while Craig (Rennie), tries to have sex with as many women as possible. A few roaming gangs is not enough to change the strange calmness that makes up the tone of the film.

Never having been a fan of Mckellar the actor, as writer and first time director, his cynical fresh approach to a subject that is usually expressed via the action film, rises above the trendiness that was the Y2K fear. Mckellar's film initially unfolds as a philosophical approach to the world's end and evolves into a romantic fantasy. Last Night was awarded prizes at the Cannes Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival as well as three Genie Awards.

The Flintstones Reboot

Coming to a television set near you is a retooling of the classic animated cartoon The Flintstones. It was announced today that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane will be helming the relaunch of the series. Production is expected to start in late 2011 with a planned air date of 2013.
The original Flintstones ran in prime time from 1960-66. Another thirteen television spin-offs ran mostly in the 70s and 80s. But it was the classic episodes which had the most success. Until The Simpsons came along The Flintstones had the record for longest running prime time cartoon at six years. The show continues to run in syndication and for years was a lunch time tradition for many children.
Seth MacFarlane started his career at Hanna-Barbera studios, the same house that first launched the TV series.
No subject has been beyond MacFarlane's scope for ridicule and lampoon, Flinstones included.

Do you think they will "reboot" the Flintstone theme lyrics as well or stick with these classic lines?

Flintstones. Meet the Flintstones.
They're the modern stone age family.
From the town of Bedrock,
They're a page right out of history.

Let's ride with the family down the street.
Through the courtesy of Fred's two feet.

When you're with the Flintstones
you'll have a yabba dabba doo time.
A dabba doo time.
You'll have a gay old time.

The Hangover Part 2 Trailer

You know that they have to top the craziness from the first movie. Watch the trailer for your preview of The Hangover Part 2. The Wofpack is back. Scheduled for a late May release in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. Look! A Monkey!

The Hangover Part 2

Red Dawn is On!

The L.A. Times is reporting an overhaul of the film Red Dawn. The movie, already complete, and long passed the originally scheduled 2010 release date, is getting a new antagonist. Perhaps MGM bankruptcy troubles were a godsend, only time will tell. As I have mentioned before, the film plot surrounds the invasion of the U.S.A. by foreign aggressors. The original script and final production had the Chinese invading. It seems though, with the huge film market that exists in China for American film, producers decided to erase any mention of attacking Chinese. The L.A. times reports "filmmakers now are digitally erasing Chinese flags and military symbols from 'Red Dawn,' substituting dialogue and altering the film to depict much of the invading force as being from North Korea."

Red Dawn
Does this have you worried? What film of good quality would receive such a major overhaul? I am starting to wonder if the studio's financial woes were not the only reason for keeping the film in the can. Is it really just money talking? Politics? We shall see once Red Dawn finally hits the big screens.
I have been on the edge of my seat waiting for the release since I heard of it in 2007. The original hit the theatres in 1984 and was a fun gritty film about a bunch of High Schoolers who take on an invading force from the Soviet Union.
The fears of the Cold War added to the success of the film. But whose afraid of China these days? North Korea and their wacky leader make a much better target. Not to mention the much smaller market of North Korea, where it is unlikely the film will ever be released. Red Dawn stars Chris Hemsworth and is expected to hit the box office some time in 2011. Details of the release are still sketchy, although it has been reported that Denmark will screen the film in September 2011. More to come...
