And The Next Thing I Knew

And the next thing I knew I was in my 40s. I have a lot of vivid memories from my early childhood. I remember sleeping in my crib. I remember very clearly my first day of kindergarten. I remember the first family vacation to Miami like it was last week.

Didn't I just learn how to skate, ride a bike? Wasn't I just running through the halls of my elementary school a couple of years ago? My first day of high school wasn't really all that long ago, I remember my mom making me wear a white dress shirt. That went over really well. I thought grade 9 was the other day when the teachers went on strike.
Didn't I just walk down the aisle for my high school graduation?  Wasn't I just hanging out with Cheesy Mike and Nicky in the White Room just last week? Didn't we just grab a beer and a cheeseburger at the T.P.? I thought I just started university. I remember having a beer at The Hive. Didn't I just deliver my first sportscast at the radio station last month? I have been working for the bank for how long? I'm getting married!? And the next thing I knew I was in my 40s.

Today is day three of the thirty day writing challenge (February edition) as arranged and hosted by Nicky and Mike over at WeWorkForCheese.com. Go check out their site to see what they wrote and see all the other participants.

  2. Don't believe anything nonamedufus tells you - he wants to kill my cats. Bad bad him.

I'm not sure he's even going to eat them - just doing it because he can. Horrible man who should not be able to win the salty licorice. :)

  3. Remember when you participated in that writing challenge? Seems like only yesterday, doesn't it?

    1. I am not sure I know what you are referring to Nicky.

  4. Just wait til you get to be as old as Dufus and me. (We're evil twins... we both try to do in cats.) That's when the time really starts flying. Although, truth be told, time seems to have come to a standstill since this little 30-2DofW thing started.

Time stops when you are staring at your screen trying to come up with an idea for tomorrow's prompt.
It flies when you have five minutes left to post it before the next one is due.

  5. I wouldn't really know what you're talking about, I'm so young it actually was yesterday that I learned how to ride a bike.

  6. Inside, I'm still in my 20's. It's another story on the outside and I think I need some new siding and a roof.

  7. Hey Shawn, I know this feeling all too well. I'm now 44 after blinking, and 50 is just a few bad nights with indigestion away. Indigo

  8. Oh hell. I can relate to this and I have a few more years of memories than you do. After a while, they all blur together and it's like living in a rainbow so don't despair - it's really sparkly where I am.

    1. It's pretty good where I am right now too. I am marking the passage of time more and more often.

  9. Most excellent post. I remember my first day of kindergarten, too, along with a lot of other things that seem like yesterday. Yet sometimes I can't remember what I did yesterday. Time does fly. If I'm the pilot, I should've taken lessons.

    1. Thank you Linda

I was getting worried because I can't remember what you did yesterday either. :)

  10. I'm not in my 40s yet. Getting there. But memory ... well, sometimes I remember things well, other times not so much. My favorite is when people ask me if I remember something and I say "no." They react like it was such an amazing part in my life, it should be there always. But I remember other things people shouldn't probably remember. The mind is crazy. Speaking of the mind, age is just a number. I guess that is part of a mind thing though.

Wait, what the hell were we talking about again?

  11. I can't believe you remember sleeping in your crib. Not unless you slept in your crib until you were 38 or so. I can't remember what I did yesterday, or with whom. In fact, I'm not even sure yesterday existed.

    1. I remember it. 2 years old. The crazy thing, and I know it's unusual, I have memories from before I could speak.
But I still go to work and forget my lunch on the counter every other day.

    2. I also remember being in my crib, jumping up and down, singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. (That's more a swaying song than a jumping song but I always liked to dance to my own beat).

  12. The BAD news is I FORGOT I was the freaking pilot! :)

  13. A good friend of mine is always talking about age and perception of time. According to him, the way a person perceives time from the ages of 1 to 25 feels just as long as the way a person perceives time starting from age 26 until death. That's not a particularly cheerful suggestion, but I thought it was interesting.

  14. 1 year to a 2 year old is half their life to date. To a 40 year old one year is a fraction. The older we get the more fleeting time appears
