Billy Idol - King's & Queen's of the Underground

Billy Idol's newest album, Kings and Queens of the Underground debuted this month at Number 34 on Billboard 200.
This is Idol's first release in nine years to contain original material.

The three-time Grammy nominee's release is his 11th chart hit and his highest debuting album. Understand of course, overall album sales have dropped to a fraction of what they were. Kings and Queens of the Underground is the highest ranked Idol album since 1990's Charmed Life which hit number eleven.

Trevor Horn was responsible for the production of most of this new release.

Idol formed the band Generation X before moving to New York to strike up a solo career in the early 1980s.

Idol kicks off his world tour in Europe in November in support of Kings Queens of the Underground. His first North American date is January 2015. For his complete tour schedule click here to go to his official website.

Fiona Apple - Hot Knife

Let's say I'm a little behind with this one. Fiona Apple's fourth studio album and first since 2005's Extraordinary Machine, The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do was released in 2012.
Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel...

The Idler Wheel... earned a nomination at the 2013 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Album and peaked at number 1 on the US alternative and US Rock album charts. It hit number 13 in Canada and number 68 in the UK.

The final track on the album, Hot Knife, features supporting vocals from Apple's sister and fellow singer Maude Maggart.

The video was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson who may be better known for his work on Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and Magnolia. Hot Knife drums may be reminiscent of 50s orchestral or African drumbeats.
From her 2012 album The Idler Wheel Is Wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More than Ropes Will Ever Do, here is Fiona Apple's Hot Knife.

My First Car

My first car was a 1983 blue Toyota Corolla. Well, it was blue and rust. My friends called it the Toyota Corroded. It was my first car so no matter how bad, it was great.
I didn't buy it. My brother gave it to me when he got his first full time job and bought his first new car. He had purchased it second hand. I think I was the fourth driver.

He gave me the Corroded with one condition.

The condition was, when I sell it, I give him the money. No problem, I said. And a fair deal if I ever heard one.

I drove the car for close to two two years. It got me to school, work and to play. In the first month I was nervous driving five-speed so I wouldn't take it on the highway. After a while, becoming more confident, highway or road way, I didn't care where it stalled.

It had an AM-FM radio but no cassette deck. It burned oil. Once a week I would fill up with gasoline. Once a month, I would have to fill up with oil.
Coolant also seemed to go fast, it too was either burning up or leaking out.

One day I was on my way to the downtown campus of Concordia University when my hood flew open. I invested in a some cord so it wouldn't happen again.
Had to scour the internet for a picture 1983 Toyota Corolla

The car had intermittent windshield wipers. What I mean is, that they worked, but only sometimes. When the windows became dirty I would have to drive through a puddle and hope the splash would clean off the grime. I was forever tailgating people praying the spray from the tires would do the same.

When it got too cold out the heater did not work. Worked like a charm during the summer.

One door wouldn't close so I had to invest in a second cord to tie it shut. I knew it was time to get rid of it when I was ticketed twice within a week for that door not closing.

When I finally saved up enough money for a down payment on a new car, the dealer would not take the Corroded as a trade-in. "Take it off the road", I was told, "it's was too dangerous". Was it because the handbrake was not connected?

So, I made a deal with a scrapyard. They agreed to tow it away and pay me $50.

When the scrap guy showed up he refused to take it. It wasn't worth the $50. A scrapyard did not want my car. It was not worthy of their level of scrap. I had to convince him to take it for free. It was my first car. It was awesome.

James Garner

James Garner, 1928-2014
One of my favourite actors James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy's Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. Garner also appeared in the "Great Escape" and "Support Your Local Gunfighter", and more recently, "Space Cowboys" and "8 Simple Rules".

He was found dead of natural causes Saturday evening at his home in Brentwood, Los Angeles.

And then my brain exploded...

Exploding head syndrome is a form of hypnagogic auditory hallucination and is a rare and relatively undocumented parasomnia event in which the subject experiences a loud bang in their head similar to a bomb exploding, a gun going off, a clash of cymbals, ringing, an earthquake, or any other form of loud, indecipherable noise that seems to originate from inside the head.

This noise usually happens at the onset of sleep or within an hour or two of falling asleep, but is not necessarily the result of a dream. Although the sound is perceived as extremely loud, it is usually not accompanied by pain. Attacks appear to change in number over time, with several attacks happening in a space of days or weeks, followed by months of remission. Sufferers often feel a sense of fear and anxiety before and after an attack, accompanied by elevated heart rate.

Attacks may also be accompanied by perceived flashes of light (when perceived on their own, known as a "visual sleep start") or difficulty in breathing. The condition is also known as "auditory sleep starts". The associated symptoms are varied, but the benign nature of the condition is emphasized and neither extensive investigation nor treatment are indicated. Sufferers may experience an inability to vocalize any sound, or mild forms of sleep paralysis during an attack. There is no known treatment.

I got that from Wikipedia.

Tastes Like Chicken

"Tastes like chicken," He said as-a-matter-of-factly.

There were six of us sitting around the table watching Claude taste the meat.

Next was Peter's turn. Claude slowly slid the plate over and Peter sliced off a small morsel of the still steaming meat and popped it into his mouth.

"Tastes like chicken," he said.

Next was Patty's turn. A little more reluctantly, she reached for the plate. Patty hesitated and looked up, but the expectant stares from everybody around strengthened her resolve. She started chewing her piece, slowly and with a reflective look on her face. She swallowed. And when there was no response, Norah elbowed her.

Tastes Like Chicken
"And?" Norah prompted.

"Hmm," said Patty. "It's a little gamey. Kind of like chicken but sinewy."

At that instant, Ronen pushed in between them taking Norah's turn and picked up the piece of meat with his two hands and with one massive bite nearly finished the cut.

"Hey!" They all shouted.
"Leave some for everyone," someone else piped in.

Ronen furiously chewed his mouthful keeping the entire group in suspense for long minutes. He finally swallowed and with a disappointed grunt said, "Tastes like chicken."

Next was Alma, the timid one of those gathered. She stopped and started twice before picking up her knife and fork. Alma cut off a tiny piece, stared at it, closed her eyes and quickly put the piece in her mouth. She chewed twice and tried mightily to suppress a gag reflex. Tiny little Alma let out a belch that could knock down walls. But she wasn't going to embarrass herself any further. She quickly chewed and swallowed and then covered her face with her hands. From behind her hands she whispered,
"Chickeny."

Norah finally got her chance. She picked up her fork and jabbed the piece still on the plate. She muttered under her breath, perhaps a prayer, as she lifted the fork to her mouth. After quick bite and a few chews, she looked up and said, "Shawn, you really need to learn how to cook. This chicken sucks."

I Faked It

I faked it. I really do not know how to write. And by that, I do not mean, I cannot write properly. I simply cannot write. I do not even speak English. I currently have no comprehension of what these words and sentences I am stringing together signify.

Random images on a page. They may as well be smiley faces.

Forget about English, I do not comprehend any language. So next time you read a story on these pages, remember, I faked it.

Shakesperean English

While researching today's topic, Shakespearean English, I fell on this Twitter handle @ShakespeareSong. And the tagline, "Songs/movie quotes/phrases in archaic language. Can you guess them?"

With 385,000 followers, I was not the first to discover @ShakespeareSong. Contemporary pop songs and phrases are translated into Elizabethan-era Early Modern English. Need I sayeth moreth? Here is a sample of a recent tweet.

I started out by looking for a Google or babelfish type translator. But none really exist. I was about to download a translator on my Android but my phone conked out and I got into a fight with my mobile service provider. I will leave that for another post. I filed a complaint and now have to wait for the end results.

But I got off topic. Recognize this song?

Shakespeare Lyrics has some 900 or so tweets with some hilarious takes on modern songs and phrases converted into old English.

Here is my favourite. Can you guess the song?

Zombies

The Walking Dead has been on hiatus since December and with the second half of the season starting on February 9th, let us take a look back at the start of fourth season and forward to the upcoming episodes. The story surrounds a former sheriff, Rick, and his son in a world overrun by the walking dead, essentially zombies.
The Walking Dead new season

Season four on AMC started up with Rick and his group of survivors holed up in a prison, the big walls and cages formerly used to keep criminals in, now used to keep the walking dead out. Surving a secondary purpose as well, it offers some sort of protection against the monsters of the new world, the other human survivors.
And the Governor came back, making peace with his losses and seemingly no longer with a chip on his shoulder. But we saw that the Governor still crosses those lines Rick will not, in the anything goes attempt to survive.
The Walking Dead
Conditions have changed radically for Rick, Carl, Michonne, and the rest of survivors as the mid-season finale saw the prison breached. The outcome of The Governor’s final attack, also saw the group splintered leaving Rick and Carl on their own, with the well-being of the rest of the crew in question, and more members either dead, or presumed dead or lost.

Typical of the television series and the novels from which it was inspired, season four and TWD in general, is filled with twists and turns. Any regular viewer, will by now have realized, no one is safe. The only constants in the Walking Dead are zombies, zombie swarms and that characters die.

Attempting to find additional realism in a world of post-apocalyptic fantasy, the survivors of Rick's team are faced with an everyday malady. A virus is killing off the healthy members.

Any of the main characters could die or disappear at any moment. Your time invested to get to know any one of them may be for naught.

Part of the back story, humans are infected if they get bit. Or, if they die they will awaken as zombies. So, let us assume the bite causes the infection via a blood infection. Otherwise, if it were an airborne infection, there would be no show. Everybody would be zombies. So, if the infection is passed on through blood, why don't the survivors get infected by blood splatter? They don't wear masks, or goggles, yet they are covered by zombie blood and guts.

Okay, okay, suspending belief is required in most fantasy stories.

So what's up next for the Rick, Glenn, Michonne and the rest of the survivors? I won't reveal any spoiler details. That wouldn't be fair. But the upcoming few episodes will show how some stay safe, and others move on to face new challenges. They won't have each other to fall back on as the group was splintered. Untied we stand. Divided? Check out the Walking Dead season four mid season preview below.

Damn the Torpedoes

Tom Petty Damn The Torpedoes

Damn the Torpedoes became Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' first top ten album. Produced by Petty and Jimmy Iovine, the album reached double platinum status. The album brought together rock, folk, country and blues in what has become Petty and the Heartbreakers’ signature style.

Damn the Torpedoes can arguably be called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' magnus opus. A little bit of the Stones and a little bit the Byrds, yet completely modern for its 1979 release.

Previous classics from Petty included, American Girl and Listen to the Heart. Damn the Torpedoes dropped more classics on the world with Refugee, Here Comes My Girl, Even the Losers and Don't Do Me Like That.
Few rock albums from the era were as powerful as this.

Re-released in 2010, one of the greatest rock albums of all time was shored up with nine bonus tracks.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, during their first year of eligibility in 2002 and are one of very few artists to score a top five record on the Billboard charts in five consecutive decades.

The Empty Bottle

The empty bottle rolled across the floor and came to a sudden stop with a clank against the leg of the table. I looked over to the couch and could see, if barely in the dusk light, the outline of a prone body. One arm thrown across his face, the other to the side and leaning on the floor, likely the source of the fallen bottle.

I shouldn't be surprised, I tell myself. The signs were there. The stress, the anger, the late nights, the depression, pills and finally drinking.

It Was No Accident

It was no accident. He was pushed. And from the seventh story window.

I didn't see it happen. But I heard everything I couldn't get there fast enough to stop it. They did say he did not suffer.

Whatever the perpetrator's intention he kept repeating the same refrain over and over. "I have to teach him a lesson. I have to teach him a lesson."

I imagine no lesson was learned as the impact was fast and fatal.

As the suspect was led away by the police he was heard saying over and over again, "No more writing challenges, no more writing challenges."

Gouda

Ambrosius Gouda was born on February 1st, 1933. Originally from the South Holland region of the Netherlands, Gouda moved with his family to Amsterdam, and then spent the rest of his life travelling and spreading the good name Gouda throughout the world.

Gouda and his wife, Jonge Kaas met as young teens in Holland. At first her father, Overjarige Kaas, did not approve. He was older and bitter, and felt that Jonge deserved to be with someone of higher order, and not yellow, as he called Gouda.

Nonetheless, they got married and had two children, a boy named Danbo, and a girl with curls named Leipäjuusto.

Their passion was strong and Jonge Kaas, even when she was old and crusty, would melt in Gouda's arms.
We will save the story of his financial fortunes and careers for another day, but let if be said, he became the big cheese he always dreamed of being.

New Music 2014

The new year dawns, and 2014 looks to be a big year in new music releases. Let's take a look at some of the musicians who will be gifting us with new music in 2014. Everything from Rock to metal to blues and jazz... I'll add to the list as I discover more (or have more time to complete my list).

Bruce Springsteen - High Hopes
High Hopes finds Bruce in a number of different musical settings, and includes the members of the E Street Band as well as guitarist Tom Morello and many additional players. Recorded in New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia and New York City, High Hopes marks Bruce’s 18th studio album and includes his own liner notes that detail the album’s evolution.

Bruce Springsteen High Hopes

U2 - Following a Live album release in December 2013, U2 is scheduled to release a studio album sometime in 2014. Word is Danger Mouse is producing. But whether it is Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, or Steve Lillywhite they should do all right. Few missteps with this band, perhaps except for 2009's No Line on the Horizon.

Adele Laurie Blue Adkins - Better known as Adele. At least to me. In followup to her massive selling 21, probably one of the most anticipated albums of the year would be this new project from Adele. High pressure but I am guessing she will deliver.

Metallica - A followup to 2011's umm... let's say, interesting collaborative effort with Lou Reed as well as the band's 2013 concert film, Through the Never. Metallica is hard at work on a brand new studio album.

Metallica Through the Never

Judas Priest - Set to release their first album since 2008's Nostradamus. Rob Halford and the crew are working on this concept album, which expects to be a return to their big and heavy sound of their earlier years.

Mötley Crüe - a 2014 retirement album? This could be the last hurrah for this Crüe. All four original member have been back in studio getting ready for this 2014 release which will coincide with a worldwide tour.

Mike Oldfield - Man on the Rocks will be Mike Oldfield's 25th album. Best known for his debut as a 20-year old, Tubular Bells, Man on The Rocks features 11 tracks including the song "Irene", inspired by Hurricane Irene which hit the Bahamas in 2011.

Adele's new album 2014

Beck's Morning Phase will be his first album since 2008. Look for the first single Blue Moon to be released on January 209th.

Morrissey - While I don't follow his career closely, I grew up listening to The Smiths, so anything by the band's front-man or other members will interest me. His new album follows the 2013 Blue Ray, MORRISSEY 25Live and his autobiography. In addition to the brand new album, Morrisey is writing his first fiction novel.

St Vincent, or Annie Erin Clark will be releasing a self-titled album in the early part of 2014. The self-titled release will be the fourth studio album by American musician St. Vincent. It is set to be released on February 24 in the United Kingdom and February 25 in the United States, through Loma Vista and Republic Records. A 2012 release was a collaborative effort with David Byrne.

St Vincent

Neneh Cherry - Cool trivia? Neneh's brother is Eagle-Eye Cherry. Fun trivia? Her stepfather's name was Don Cherry.  Best known for her songs Buffalo Stance and her brilliant duet with Youssou N'Dour, 7 Seconds. Officially, this will mark Cherry first solo album in 17 years. Actually, it is supposed to be a collaboration with RocketNumberNine.

Drive By Truckers - Look for a new set of songs from this southern rock band out of the music hotbeds of Athens, Georgia and Alabama.

And legend Stevie Wonder will be putting out not, one but two new albums this year. His first in almost a decade. One will be a set of originals, the other, a gospel collection.

Blondie 2014

Blondie - Yes. You read that right. Blondie will be releasing their tenth studio album. Deborah Harry and the band have been keeping busy, if a little below the radar. The single A Rose by Any Other Name hit the airwaves back in June 2013.

Foo Fighters - With a tour scheduled and a new album, Dave Grohl is back leading the band following his guest work with QOTSA. In an interview with XFM, Dave Grohl announced that their next album has been slated for a 2014 release. Grohl said “...We have been in our studio writing and in the past few weeks we’ve written an album and we are going to make this album in a way that no-one’s ever done before and we’re pretty excited about it…"
Foo Fighters

Following his two highly successful duets albums, Tony Bennett is working on a on some swing and jazz covers with Lady Gaga.

Johnny Cash - Out Among the Stars is an album that features some of his recording from the early 1980s.

Alice Cooper is putting his 27th studio album under wraps. An album of covers that includes ‘Break on Through’ by the Doors, ‘Revolution’ by the Beatles, ‘Foxey Lady’ by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Who‘s ‘My Generation’.

These Numbers Are F*cked

Inigo
My boss called me over the other day.

"Shawn," he said, " Can you help me out?"

"Sure!" I replied.

"Shawn," my boss continued, "Tell me if these numbers look right to you. If they are good, I will finish copulating the data."

One Woman Army

Kate Earl, Stronger

Alaskan native Kate Earl's third album Stronger was released towards the end of 2012. Now based in L.A. this 32-year old singer's indie / country-folk sound comes through in One Woman Army, a song she wrote, inspired by her young son.

On One Woman Army, she promises, "Here I am, baby, I'm your one-woman army I'd fight for you, I'll die, I'll be your protector". She says she is especially proud of the tune for the way it achieves one of her biggest goals as a songwriter: "It's one of those songs that you can take to mean whatever it means to you. It can be a love song; it can be about friendship; it can be a song from a parent to a child. I want people to identify with my music like that."

Godzilla
A giant radioactive monster called Godzilla appears to wreak destruction on mankind. 2014 also marks the 60th anniversary of Godzilla. The film stars Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche. And look for a cameo from Akira Takarada who starred in the 1954 original. Don't believe the rumours that Olsen is playing Godzilla.

Sin City: A Dame to Die For
Sin City: A Dame to Die For
My personal choice for 2014. A sequel to the 2005 film and based on the graphic novels. The release was pushed to 2014, with a title change as well. The film's ensemble cast includes returning actors Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke, and Bruce Willis.
Newcomers to the series include Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Jamie Chung, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Haysbert, Marton Csokas, Julia Garner, Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, Stacy Keach, Christopher Meloni, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Piven, and Crystal McCahill.

Three of the film's four segments - "Just Another Saturday Night", "A Dame To Kill For" and "The Long, Bad Night" - are prequels to the first film.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1
If I said Jennifer Lawrence stars in this one would that be a spoiler? This movie was split in two, perhaps taking the lead set by The Hobbit. In the third movie of the series, Katniss Everdeen reluctantly leads the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. As the war that will determine the fate of Panem escalates to the point of destruction to the other districts by the Capitol, Katniss must figure out for herself whom she can trust and what needs to be done, with everything she cares for in the balance.

The Expendables 3
Joinng Sylvester Stallone this time around will be Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Mel Gibson, in addition to the usual cast of veteran mercenaries. Gibson is the bad guy this time around. Look for fights, blood, guts and bullets. I would like to see an Expendables with Eastwood, Bronson and  McQueen.
Release date: August 15, 2014
Look for an all-female cast version of the Expendables down the road.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again
I have mixed feeling about the The Hobbit. I have read every book with Tolkien's name on it. I have read books about Tolkien and books about his books. I have seen all the film and TV adaptations of his works. Am I overselling the fact that I am a fan?
While I was looking forward to this latest adaptation, there was no reason to stretch the book into three films, there was not enough material to do so. That being said, this last one will contain the major battles in the story and should be exciting.
